What's a “hardware key”?
Hardware key: the key that identifies the computer lives in its security chip (Secure Enclave on Mac, TPM on Windows) and can't be copied to another machine.
Software key: the computer doesn't have that chip; the key is stored and protected by the system (in the macOS Keychain or by Windows data protection).
